A misfit crew of queer dancers meet in their favorite Berlin club for a 48hour party. Shy, Tinker, Mikel, and Hermes quickly disappear into the darkness of techno beats. When the mundane rituals of the club transform into charged thresholds, the crew inadvertently traverses the seven gates of the underworld. Their descent evokes the ancient mythology of Inanna, and each one must confront their inner darkness to reveal their own truths.
The research and writing of the script has been in process since 2023. The concept was created while in residence at California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. Working closely with several mentors including Calum Walter, Ernest Marrero, Nicole Panter Dailey and Abigail Severence.
The script is a queer refusal of the "hero's journey'. Instead, Front Left is based on Scandinavian narrative form, built around multiple characters with a central ritual-based truth as the red thread. It serves as a recurring point of convergence where characters discuss, realign, and develop- or sometimes not.
Front Left is structured on the mythological seven gates one must pass through to traverse the underworld. It is set in the hyper specific milieu of the local club scene and written to reflect the linguistic diversity off all the queers who have sought shelter in the space of one city; Berlin.Drawing from the concrete details of my own life and the shared experiences of the queer immigrant community around me, the script carries an authenticity and a determination to reflect the traumas, intensities, and joy in the queer search for belonging.
